I

Sometimes the fields, sometimes the cows, change size.

Too strong a sun will push the fences back,

the open ground becomes an open eye,

the grass goes white, the lie of the land as flat

as overhead its blue unblinking sky,

the cows are pinprick rectangles of black

or slow cylindrical oil-storage tanks

that bump along together side by side,

eating themselves into the sunburnt bank

their blank exaggerated bodies hide.

Only a state of mind or trick of light,

I tell myself, but no less felt for that:

sometimes the cows, sometimes the fields, take fright,

the view foreshortens, thunderclouds close rank.
